Quick Overview

Asparagus is in Not In Season!

Asparagus a young edible shoot, commonly called a "spear".  It is an excellent source of folic acid and contains vitamin C, potassium, thiamine, riboflavine, vitamin B6, copper, Vitamin A, iron , phosphorus and zinc. Asparagus contains a sulfurous substance that imparts an odor to urine. It also contains asparagine, an acid substance that gives the vegetable its characteristic flavour.

To store Asparagus, cut off an inch from the bottom, wrap the fresh-cut areas in wet paper toweling, place in our special Onya Reusable Produce Bag, and store in the refrigerator high humidity drawer. This will increase the storage life.

Asparagus is damaged by ethylene, which is an odorless, harmless gass emitted by summer fruits, stone fruits, apples, avocados, bananas, mushrooms and tomatoes. Make sure you store asparagus away from those!

Serene Nature House recommends that you set the two drawers in the fridge at a high humidity setting which means that you set the drawers to close off completely from bringing in air. You use these drawers for your greens, cruciferous vegetables, cucumbers, berries, eggplants and herbs. For your other fruits, avocados, mushrooms and bananas you can you use the middle or top shelf. This will keep these fruits and vegetables segragated and elongate the life of your produce!
